KENYA: Fund Set Up for Gender Violence

NAROK Deputy governor Evelyne Wastabei said his government has set aside funds to deal with gender based violence.

Speaking during a media workshop between women and journalist in Narok town Wastabei said the women's kitty would be use to empower women economically and ensure they are independent.

She said through the kitty, the government also seek to sensitize women on business ideas and help them to their feet in exploiting available business opportunities.

The deputy governor said women often becomes targets of gender based violence in the region and empowering them economically was one way of fighting the vice withing the society.

"Empowering a woman is empowering the community and with such empowerment they would get exposed to the current dynamics and wake up to the call of fighting violence targeted at them," she added

Sharing women's sentiments participating during the workshop, Wastabei said if the plights facing women among the maa community is ignored then the community would soon be going to the dogs.

"With the prevalence of gender based violence in the name of culture targeted at our women in the county then we can confirm that the society is actually headed the dog and we are moving in as government to stop it through empowerment of women," she added.

The deputy governor also asked the community to shun retrogressive cultures like wife buttering and embrace cultures that benefits the community.

She also said through the government organized sensitization men would be brought on board so to enlighten them on the need to empowering women to take up their position on the society.

"We will not leave men out of all these because without then then our women would still undergo the same situation they are undergoing now," she said.

Women attending the workshop told of suffering women were undergoing in the hands of their husbands in the name of the culture.

The workshop duped Peace Initiative Kenya was organized by African Woman and Child feature services and facilitated by USAid.

Wastabei also said as a way of recognizing the women in the society, 15 women from various parties have been nominated to the Narok County assembly.
