The head of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has welcomed the return of a renowned gynaecologist to the clinic he founded for rape victims in the eastern part of the country.

Dr. Denis Mukwege was back at work on Monday at the Panzi Clinic in Bukavu nearly three months after surviving an attack on his home in which his security guard was killed.

In a statement, UN envoy for the DRC Roger Meece said Dr. Mukwege is recognized globally for his work in the physical and mental rehabilitation of women victims of rape.

Deputy UN Spokesperson Eduardo del Buey has more.

"Mr. Meece said that Dr. Mukwege's courageous decision to return after he was attacked at his residence on 25 October 2012 demonstrates his infallible commitment and dedication to the several cases of sexually-abused women reported daily in the province.  Mr. Meece also reiterated the hope that more light will be shed on the attack and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice." At the time of the attack, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described Dr. Mukwege as "a force for good," and the Panzi Clinic as "a haven for the most vulnerable."
