A senior health officer at Tudor District Hospital has said the government has disbursed money meant for free maternal healthcare to public hospitals. David Wanjala said they have received the pledged amount.

The government through the Ministry of Health in a letter dated June 1 sent to all public hospitals and dispensary, had pledged to pay Sh5,000 for any delivery in hospitals and Sh2,500 at a dispensary.

Wanjala said they used to charge Sh1,500 for a delivery and the amount would escalate to above Sh2,000 if other charges like medicine and beds were included, hence Sh5,000 is enough for every woman.

"We are recording between five to eight deliveries daily at our hospital and we are grateful we received enough to sustain us for the next three months," he said.

Different public hospital have received different amounts of money depending on the number of patients they each receive on a daily basis.

Wanjala said many mothers deliver in hospitals between August and October because many conceive during the December and New Year holidays.
