Governor Amason Kingi has slashed his salary by 10 per cent. He said the cut will be diverted to development projects in the county. Kingi said the amount will specifically be used in supporting women’s projects in Kilifi.

He earns a net salary of Sh500,000 a month, he said. “Our women are important in the community. I am going to support them by donating part of my salary so that they can engage in development projects in their groups,” Kingi said.

He was speaking on Saturday during International Women’s Day celebrations at Marikebuni in Magarini subcounty. Kingi called on women groups to ensure accountability in their projects.

He said this will ensure the projects improve their livelihoods. Kingi said his support for the women is only guaranteed if their manage their projects transparently. He said women should not accept to be used by politicians for selfish gains.

Kingi was reacting to reports that local women split in political camps. “All women should work together for the sake of development of the area. Divisions among them cannot help them in anyway,” he said.

Kingi said women should be at the forefront in fighting poverty. He asked residents to petition elected leaders to deliver services promised during the last elections.
